I'm finally back after a short hiatus .

I find this blog so dead , so decided to update .

Okay . SYF is over already .

Next up, MYE and then Band Under The Stars!

Put in the same amount of time and effort that you had put in during the SYF period .

There will be a band practice on 5th May , 3.30pm-6.30pm to prepare us for the SYF Aesthetics Showcase on the 6th May .

the flute section alumni are very proud of you all! you all managed to get what we have aimed for ever since the SYF 2 years back. so also means that you all fulfilled our dream!
im definitely sure that the gold that you all got was not due to miracle. it was due to the hard work and effort you all putted in for the past few months! i knew you guys could do it!
now SYF is over. so its back to relax and studying time! exams are coming soon uh? study hard yah? and let's wish jasmine all the best for her Os!

we shall have a retreat after the exams! ICE CREAMMMMMMMM! see which day you guys are free and we shall celebrate together! =)

i know you all confirm will not get to see this post in time, but i still wanna throw in my well wishes! so bear with me okie?

its really worrying that ALL of you have not been to indoor SYF before! but whatever it is, we (flute section alumni) always believe in you all! we believe you all can do it! have confidence in yourself! GLOW ON THAT STAGE! do your best with no regrets! i dont want to hear any "if only" after you get the results.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! you can do it! dont feel nervous yah? i understand how you feel playing first alone, but no worries! constant air! if not your high notes will go off. take your time to play those 6 notes, but at the same time, watch mf. COUNT! STAY CALM!

Egan:
you arh! cannot nervous! if not your embrochure.... constant air also. you can do it! remember to come in together with the other brids for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!

Rachel:
you another one! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! stay calm and dont panic! if not your 6 notes wont be together. BREATHE and try to get in tune with the rest. cover those holes properly also, if not no sound.

this blog is so dead, so i try to keep it surviving cus i know you guys are busy with SYF!

wooh! SYF is approaching. and i bet you guys are feeling the tension now. its good that you are having the tension cus you are aware that time is running out.
be confident! just play! if you know your parts well enough, you should be able to just play out and watching the conductor at ALL times. never be scared to play out.
practice hard yah?

and please! dont neglate your studies. i know band is taking up loads of time, but find some time to study. dont make me form a study group specially for flute section arh~ if you have any problems, can approach any of the alumni.

It's been so long since i last post something here .

As you know , all of us have to attend sectionals until i-don't-know-when .
Okay , there are three choices for you to choose .
First choice is to come everyday [Mon, Tues , Wed] for sectionals for 1 hour each day .
Second choice to come Monday and Tuesday , 1and1/2 hour for sectionals each day .
Third choice is to come either on Mon , Tues or wed , 2 hour for sectionals .
and i think our sectionals area is at 3F classroom .

You must also cope your studies and band well .
Learn how to manage your time .

Okay , to add on what rachel post .
I find research on ' how to play the flute '
this may be the basic , but perhaps you dont know .
and i find this really interesting . Read on !

Assemble the flute. Insert the open end of the head joint into the wider end of the body (usually closest to the printed brand name of the instrument). Align the embouchure hole with the first key on the body. Take the foot joint from the case and connect it to the other end of the body. Align the main rod of the foot joint with the last key of the body. Adjust the alignment if needed.

Practice on a bottle to learn how to blow into a flute. Glass or plastic works equally well. Blow across the opening to produce a sound. You should also be blowing slightly downward. The less liquid in the bottle the lower the pitch and the more liquid the higher the pitch. This blowing technique is the proper way to ease notes from a flute.

Try to produce a sound from your flute. Try with the head joint only, at first. Place the lip plate just below your lower lip, purse your lips, take a deep breath, and blow as if you were saying "tooo". It will not happen straight away so be patient. Try moving your embouchure hole around. Practice in front of a mirror and look at the shape of your lips. Your embouchure should be about the size of a drinking straw and shaped like a circle or teardrop.Here's a neat way to work on producing sound:
Press your lips together. Roll the lips inward, so that there is no pink showing.
Kiss your flute--place the embouchure hole completely against your pressed lips, so that you can feel the full circle around your mouth.
Roll the flute away from your lips approximately 90 degrees, so that the embouchure hole is now level with the ceiling.
Pretend to spit out a watermelon seed! This may assist you in finding a good embouchure shape. If you achieve a sound using this method, try adding a stream of air after your initial "spit".

Learn how to hold the flute. Hold the flute with the your mouth on the lip plate and the remainder of the instrument pointing to the right. Your left hand should be nearest the mouthpiece and should be facing towards you from the other side of the flute. Your left thumb should rest on a key. Your right hand should be further down on the flute to the right and should be facing away from you. There is no key for your right thumb. Balance your flute with your thumbs.

Have proper posture while playing. Sit or stand up straight and hold the flute a little below parallel. Your arms should feel relaxed, but they may ache after extended playing. Crossing your legs will often affect your tone if you allow you posture to collapse as well. Instead bend a little in the knees to not overstretch them. Keep your head up to allow the air passing through the air channel.

Warm up before playing. Octave slurs (slurring from the octave below to the octave above and vice versa) are good for flutes. Play a chromatic scale to make sure your flute is functioning properly.

Tune before you play, but after you warm up. Tune to a concert A.[1] If the tuner says you are sharp (moves to the right), pull out the head joint. If you are flat (tuner will move to the left), push in the head joint. Try tuning to the low and high A. Take into account that cold temperatures will cause an instrument to go flat, and warm temperatures will cause it to be sharp. This is especially important if you are playing in an ensemble.

Clean your flute thoroughly after playing. Use a swab or a cloth strung through your tuning rod to remove spit from the inside of your flute. Occasionally polish it with a cloth.

Once again , i'm back to blog some stuff !

We've bought the section some stationeries
Stationeries that we think the section needs it .
Pencils , erasers , pencil leads for mechanical pencils , foolscaps . etc
we've also named the stationeries by writing the word Flute on it
so that , people from other section wont mistaken that the stationeries are theirs .
and also , please keep the stationeries , especially pencils in usuable condition !

And yes , we are going to have a 10 days break real soon .
During this break , you can do whatever you like
BUT , you must still keep the good work up . your playing !
like what MR.F said , we've tremendous improvement
but , we have to maintain the good work
and achieve a higher goal .

hey dears,

dont be demoralised after what happened (be it running notes, solos, etc.) on friday night.
the more you all should take things positive! it shows that you guys really need to take sectionals and band practice seriously. it also shows that you all need more practice.

i noticed that actually some of you can play, but lack of confidence. confidence is that thing you need to succeed in not only the music environment, but everywhere! i understand how you all feel when you have solos or even hell load of running notes. be brave and face all of them! practice slowly. sure from impossible to possible. you need to believe in yourself.

and also remember to always watch the conductor. you will never know when he wants to slow down or increase speed. if possible, memorise ALL your scores (i think you all have to do so anyway) so you all can look at the conductor at all times. you all have pencils on every stand too. make full use of it. take note of those parts you need to work on and even those small little things that the conductor said. the pencil is there for you to take down notes so that you will remember.

work hard yah? i believe you guys can do it! i did see some improvements that day when i when back to school. but dont be complacent, you should work even harder. put in effort! we, the alumni, are always here supporting you all! we believe in you all! if there's anything, feel free to just contact us!

okay.
i noe that ytd nitght practice was a bad one.
we heard how we play
i believe that sec1 is the 1st time saw him to change the face 1st time.
even me myself oso veri scared of him.
when come is time to play in front of him.
non of us can play well.

so we all must learnt from our mistake and practice.

heyhey my lovelies!

i strongly encourage ALL of you to come down for sectionals when there is, especially on saturdays. i know saturdays are "off days" and you all have sectionals during band practice but its after school and you all would feel tired and dont feel like practising right? if Mr Phua is there for sectionals, you all will practice. if he is not there, it would become slack-tionals right? i have been through those times before too.
but if you want to play well and also get the best section award, sectionals will really be super helpful for you. bear in mind, SYF is next year. and who loves running notes? i also dont like running notes, but i still have to practice and play them. as a flautists and oboists most of your parts are running notes. you cant escape from it. running notes are very important and things you need to overcome. and if you have noticed, most of the pieces for the japan trip and concert have many running notes. the more difficult it is, the more you should practice! never give up!

i really really hope your mindset is wanting to improve for the better. dont be contented because of little things and stop improving. im no different from you all. im also still learning and having sectionals too. no pain, no gain. so make use of your seniors and alumni to improve yourself. dont know anything, MUST ask! all of us are always here to help you.
there is no short cut in music. practice makes perfect. even the pofessionals needs to practice. work hard! i believe in you all! JIAYOU!

sectionals is a time for you to get all your parts and notes correct.
combine band practice is a time for the whole band to combine and let the conductor make the music sound better.

There's sectionals today !
for those who have missed out the sectionals ,
today , we have decided the pattern for the section tee shirt
and if there's no changes , the shirt will be black in colour and red colour for the font
i know your reaction will be ' Why black ? '
as we had hard time choosing the colours , many have different colours in mind
and so , we chosen black .
we'll try to order the tees soon & hope to get the section tees soon .

There's BAND PRACTISES ON THURSDAY & FRIDAY !
